Tourism & Handicap

Welcoming people with disabilities

Tourisme & Handicap” is a french label awarded to tourism professionals that allows them to commit to a quality approach to accessibility to leisure activities for people with disabilities.

Since 2014, the Carcassonne Municipal Tourist Office has been awarded the “Tourism & Handicap” label. This label is the only State mark awarded to tourism professionals that allows a commitment to a quality approach to accessibility to leisure activities and holidays for all, particularly for people with hearing, mental, motor or visual disabilities.

Thus, the various point of information of the Carcassonne Municipal Tourist Office ensure the reception of people with disabilities by means of various facilities such as :

  • the marking of disabled parking spaces on the map of the tourist guide
  • the creation of a parking space in accordance with standards with a protected pathway to the tourist office
  • a call bell to help open the door
  • accessibility of the premises for people with reduced mobility and visual impairments (with adapted reception tables, sufficient door width, door handles, ramps and accessible toilets)
  • decorating and furnishing reception areas with colour schemes and contrasts that are easy for visually impaired people to identify
  • the provision of a tourist guide presenting the tourist service providers in the municipality who are able to receive people with disabilities
  • the provision of a personal listening system for the hearing impaired and a magnetic necklace for MP3 players
  • the provision of a presentation of the city of Carcassonne in Braille and enlarged characters (in French)

The Free Mobile App “Carcassonne Interactive”

The Carcassonne Municipal Tourist Office has set up various games and maps for people with reduced mobility to enable them to make the most of the destination.

  • Tours adapted and downloadable in the application to discover the Bastide Saint-Louis and the Medieval City of Carcassonne.
  • Digital games adapted for people with disabilities: a quest on the theme of the Cathars in the medieval city and a discovery of the Bastide Saint-Louis.

Welcoming Senior Residences

The Carcassonne Municipal Tourist Office has set up several activities aimed at a very wide audience, particularly for seniors.

  • Medieval Workshops which include several thematic workshops such as calligraphy, leather work, the science of heraldry…
  • A Virtual Reality Film retracing the history of the Medieval City from the Romans to the present day, through the Middle Ages, the disuse and the arrival of Viollet-le-Duc.

These products are completely adapted for a senior clientele who have been completely seduced during various stays in Carcassonne. It is therefore essential for the whole team of the Tourist Office to continue and accentuate this welcome in order to help them discover the history of the medieval city in an unusual way.
