Le Chemin du Piémont Pyrénéen

Découvrez le Chemin du Piémont Pyrénéen, un des chemins de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle et traversez la ville de Carcassonne.

Saint James of Compostela has been, for years, a major destination for countless pilgrims from all over Europe, as well as hikers seeking landscapes and heritage discoveries. Since the 9th century, pilgrims have taken various routes to reach it. These routes were recognized by Europe in 1987, and four of them have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1998, one year after the classification of the City of Carcassonne.

Many paths cross France to reach Spain, but the GR 78, an iconic trail crossing the Pyrenees, is available to you from Carcassonne.

The GR 78 – The Pyrenean Foothills Route

Recharge, change your pace, make wonderful encounters, and discover breathtaking sites and landscapes. Enjoy the riches of the Aude department by taking the Pyrenean Foothills Route, an alternative path to the Arles Way, which follows the GR 78 from Aude to Saint Jean-Pied-de-Port.

Discover this fifth route, further south, less known, less traveled, but equally steeped in history, beautiful landscapes, and exceptionally rich in its diverse heritage. A warm and simple welcome awaits you, along with mountain ranges, forests, mountains, plains, and villages whitewashed with lime. Admire fortified cities and bastides, abbeys, cathedrals, convents, hospices, and vineyards.

A true epic adventure to experience individually or in a group, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean.

Follow the route in Carcassonne with nails installed thanks to European LEADER funds, amounting to 64%, and the collaboration between the GAL (Local Action Group) Carcassonnais and the Carcassonne Municipal Tourist Office.
